Induction of apoptosis by the Mallotus philippensis hexane extract. HL-60 cells were incubated with increasing extract concentrations (1 and 1.5 mg/ml dry root equivalent) for 48 h. Then, cells were double stained with Hoechst 33258 and propidium iodide, and examined under a fluorescence microscope with DAPI filter. Nuclei with morphological changes indicating apoptosis (Methods) were counted. (a). control; (b). 1 mg dry roots equivalent/ml medium and (c). 1.5 mg dry roots equivalent/ml medium.
