The non-canonical and canonical EF-loops. The sequences comparisons of NOX5's EF1 and EF2 to the preventative non-canonical calpain V1 EF1and canonical CaM EF1 is presented in A, where the Ca2+ ligands provided by the carbonyl group of backbone is underlined. The crystal structure of the EF-loop of CaM EF1 (PDB: 1XER) indicates a canonical arrangement (B) where the structure of the EF-loop of calpain V1 EF1 (PDB: 1DVI) indicates a non-canonical arrangement (C). The Ca2+ ions and water molecules are presented as yellow and cyanine spheres, respectively. The figure is created using PyMol (Molecular Graphics System, Schrönger LLC).
